Why you should only purchase e-Bikes and e-Scooters from reputable sources
The number of fires involving e-Scooters and e-Bikes is increasing - the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said that it attended more than 116 fires involving them in 2022.
In 2023, the LFB says that it’s been called to, on average, a new fire once every two days.
As this method of transport becomes more popular, particularly in large cities, it’s never been more important to ensure that you’re not only charging them safely, but purchasing them from a reputable source to begin with.
Back in 2020, UK charity Electrical Safety First said:
“As personal transport evolves, we are becoming increasingly dependent on electricity and consumers should be cautious of the risks involved. Items such as e-bikes and e-scooters are powered by lithium ion batteries and will be required to charge for long periods of time. Substandard versions of these batteries can pose a serious risk to life if a fault occurs.
Where you purchase your batteries and charger packs is just as important as the bike or scooter itself. With so many set to make the purchase of an electric bike or scooter this year, consumers should exercise caution about whom they are buying from.”
Three years on, as fires involving these products become more common, F.I.R.E. Consultancy is reiterating that advice: ensure you’re shopping with reputable retailers when buying products like this.
We advise sticking to well-known brands and retailers, while you should follow the Brigade’s tips on charging, including reducing the risk of overheating and where to charge them.
