Director

We are looking for an experienced Director to lead teams and support business growth during a significant period of expansion. You will manage colleagues across office locations, including direct reports such as Engineers and administrative staff, while providing mentorship, technical leadership and clear management support to strengthen team capability.

You will be expected to produce your own fire safety strategies, fire risk assessments, bespoke fire engineering, first principles and performance-based designs supported by fire and evacuation modelling, evacuation modelling, risk analysis and cost benefit analysis as appropriate. This will include site visit attendance and a level of commitment to training programmes no different to other staff except working at a more technical level.

This role is suitable for someone with a BSc, MSc or PhD in an engineering or science subject who has completed at least 10 years’ relevant experience and judgement to undertake the responsibilities expected of a person with significant control.

This is a key leadership role, providing senior direction across technical delivery, regional office development, team management and business growth, while applying fire engineering expertise to complex built environment projects.

Responsibilities 

We’re looking for an experienced fire engineering professional who can lead complex technical work, support the development of colleagues and contribute to business growth. You’ll be responsible for:

  • Producing fire safety engineering reports 
  • Supporting development of colleagues and junior staff 
  • Reviewing design information such as drawings and documents. 
  • Ensuring work is compliant with client expectations and contractual obligations. 
  • Resolving fire engineering concerns by applying accepted principles, codes and standards. 
  • Developing business streams through fee proposals, work conversion, client retention and identification of future talent needs.
  • Shaping the business by taking accountability for regional office development, senior management direction, profitability, talent acquisition, team capability and staff management.
  • Managing direct reports, which may include Associates, Engineers, junior staff and administrative colleagues.
  • Providing leadership for teams based in regional or alternative office locations, ensuring clear communication, accountability and performance management.

 Knowledge and skills 

You will hold a BSc, MSc or PhD in a suitable engineering or science-related subject and will have completed at least 10 years’ relevant experience in fire engineering or a closely related technical field.

Registration with a relevant institution, such as the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is expected.

You should also be able to demonstrate active engagement with the wider fire safety profession, such as involvement in professional bodies, technical groups or special interest groups.

You should also be able to demonstrate relevant knowledge and practical experience across all the following areas:

  • Developing holistic fire safety strategies and performance-based designs, supported by fire and evacuation modelling, risk analysis and cost benefit analysis as appropriate.
  • Applying fire engineering principles to the built environment
  • Providing fire safety advice within regulated industries such as nuclear power generation
  • Management of fire safety on construction sites
  • Interface with Fire and Rescue Services (private and public)
  • Communicating and presenting design solutions to a wide audience consisting of both technical and non-technical stakeholders 
  • Understanding of appropriate UK legislation, regulations, national and international standards 
  • Understanding of the requirements of insurers and appropriate life / asset protection 
  • Fire water network and Fire water pumping systems including fire water pumps, storage tanks etc. 
  • Water Spray Systems for all applications including, spheres, above ground vessels, transformers, storage tanks, flammable and combustible pumps etc. 
  • Relevant analysis, design and specification software / techniques in addition to Hydraulic Calculations for all water-based fire protection system including sprinkler systems, water spray systems, fire pump sizing, fire water network analysis, foam systems 
  • Managing and motivating technical and non-technical team members to deliver project commitments to programme and cost.
  • Experience managing direct reports across technical and non-technical roles, including Associates, Engineers and administrative staff.
  • Ability to lead and support teams across multiple office locations.
  • Applying an analytical, methodical approach to engineering problems.

Salary

Competitive salary, dependent on experience and suitability for the role.

Location

This is primarily an office-based role, with travel required for client meetings, site visits and business development activity.
