We are looking for a Trainee Fire Engineer to support the business during a period of substantial growth. The successful candidate will develop their capability in fire strategies, fire risk assessments, bespoke fire engineering solutions, performance-based designs, fire and evacuation modelling, risk analysis and cost benefit analysis where appropriate. The role will also include site visits and involvement in training programmes.

This role is suitable for someone with a BSc, MSc or PhD in an engineering or science subject who is developing practical fire engineering experience and will normally remain at trainee level for up to 3 years. 

This is an opportunity to apply fire engineering principles to live projects, supported by experienced technical specialists. 

Responsibilities

We’re looking for someone ambitious who’s willing to develop their capabilities and career with us. You’ll be;

• Producing fire safety engineering reports 
• Supporting colleagues working alongside other engineers 
• Reviewing design information such as drawings and documents. 
• Ensuring work is compliant with client expectations and contractual obligations. 
• Resolving fire engineering concerns by applying accepted principles, codes and standards. 

Knowledge and skills 

Ideally, you’ll hold a degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering/science related subject. If you don’t have a degree, then a NEBOSH Fire Certificate is a good foundation to work from. 

A registration with a relevant institution, such as the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is also desirable.

As a trainee, you’ll have the opportunity to learn and develop across all the following, however experience and knowledge of any of the following would be advantageous;

• Developing holistic fire safety strategies and performance-based designs, supported by fire and evacuation modelling, risk analysis and cost benefit analysis as appropriate. 
• Implementing the principle of fire science to the built environment
• Providing fire safety advice within regulated industries such as nuclear power generation
• Management of fire safety on construction sites
• Interface with Fire and Rescue Services (private and public)
• Communicating and presenting design solutions to a wide audience consisting of both technical and non-technical stakeholders 
• Understanding of appropriate UK legislation, regulations, national and international standards 
• Understanding of the requirements of insurers and appropriate life / asset protection 
• Fire water network and Fire water pumping systems including fire water pumps, storage tanks etc. 
• Water Spray Systems for all applications including, spheres, above ground vessels, transformers, storage tanks, flammable and combustible pumps etc. 
• Relevant analysis, design and specification software / techniques in addition to Hydraulic Calculations for all water-based fire protection system including sprinkler systems, water spray systems, fire pump sizing, fire water network analysis, foam systems

Location
