The fire (May 8, 1979) was caused by a damaged electrical cable igniting furniture made of polyurethane foam, which produced large amounts of thick toxic smoke.

10 people lost their lives, 47 were taken to hospital for treatment and 6 fire officers were injured.

This was the start of a long campaign, with the FBU central, to challenge the use of flammable foam in furniture. This eventually led to the Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Regulations, which forced furniture manufacturers to use safer materials]

In 1988, The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations, external came into effect, forcing manufacturers to make furniture fillings and covers from safer materials.
